Uneven distribution of physicians
The uneven distribution of consultants across the country develops to see increases in the situation where London has twice the number of senior doctors per capita compared with rest of the country. Rural regions suffer from staff shortages, which reduces the attractiveness of the regions to train in. As trainees flood to urban areas to train, they stay in the area they train and shortages in the rural regions become increasingly worse.
Proposed workforce impact
- There is difficulty filling posts in rural areas and areas other than London.
- Oversupply in London areas
- Most figures can be too focused on London and not reflect the true demand for acute physicians in England.
