There is a 'protecting our professions' response to change

Staff may respond to developing drivers by a protectionist response. This may have pros and cons: some expressions of this could be negative and reactionary, slowing down beneficial change; other aspects could protect patients and the public by retaining safe and effective proven ways of working.

Some of the demands to which 'protecting our profession' becomes a response could come from patients and the public (e.g. for more information, more contact time, different types of care). Others could come from the Government or employers (e.g.skill mix changes, role expansions, working terms and conditions).
