Telemedicine changes GP roles and functions
The use of new telemedicine technologies allows for care to be provided remotely and for more proactive monitoring of patients to encourage self-care. The GP and the practice team workforce would need to be trained to implement, monitor and use these technologies. This may lead to some roles/functions changing and also could allow for remote procedures to be conducted.
Proposed workforce impact
- There will be new training requirements (GPs, practice staff and other healthcare staff to be trained on new telemedicine technology).
- There is less demand for GP appointments.
- Role changes in that some functions can be automated by new technology.
- New roles are developed to administer technology.
