Shape of training review
Increases to general practice training (3250 GP training target for 2015) will impact on recruitment to specialty training. The Shape of Training review may decreased specialty training time, but not the length of training for ICMs as a generalist specialty. This results in it being a less attractive option. However, prevention of hospital admission through primary care service provision reduces demand for A&ICM.
Proposed workforce impact
- It could mean many conditions can be managed more effectively in primary and community settings, reducing demand in hospitals through avoidance of unnecessary admittance.
Additional research questions
- Will primary care be adequately funded to effectively prevent avoidable hospital admissions?
- Will a sufficient number of trainees want to go into general practice?
- Would a reduction in hospital-based specialty training balance with a reduction in unnecessary hospital treatment?
