Rural skill demand

The need to provide some critical care in rural settings remains. This needs to be balanced against the economic viability of providing specialist and trained staff. Flexibility is key to providing the range of services needed in the rural setting; a generalist skill set is often preferred rurally to provide this.

Proposed workforce impact

  • An increase in demand for dual-CCT holders to provide flexible service provision in rural areas could occur.

Additional research questions

  • How effectively can a single-CCT holder provide safe care across both specialties?
  • In future rural settings, is the role of an anaesthetist to provide anaesthesia only or will they continue their current role mix?
