Richer skill mix could improve outcomes and reduce overall costs

Some contend that a workforce with more degree-level entrants and richer skill mix in service settings increases the quality of care, improves outcomes and thus could reduce overall healthcare costs in the long run. There is some research evidence to support this, but also a lot of null evidence and a general lack of research. Unless the case is proven that a more expensive skill mix reduces overall healthcare system costs, the competing cost pressures on employers may make richer mixes and more staff per patient unlikely to occur in the next 10 years at least.
