Public health specialty training does not reflect increased susceptibility to global health trends
There is an increased threat of worldwide health protection issues, as shown by the Ebola virus outbreak of 2014/15. It demonstrated a need for maintained health protection skills at the international level, and this need may not be reflected in current public health thinking.
The importance of health protection may be forgotten, if training is too narrowly focused on providing staff for local authorities. Health protection skills and experience need to be maintained - even if they are of less direct relevance to local authorities.
Training needs to ensure a well-rounded skill set - not just focus on needs of local authorities.
