Primary, secondary and social care integration

Integration between secondary, primary and social care requires anaesthetists to take on more perioperative roles. This provides greater continuity of care for patients as they go through surgical, urgent or emergency pathways. Anaesthetists work with geriatricians to provide initial care with the latter taking over for reablement. ACCPs are also able to assist in perioperative work.

Additional research questions

  • Could currently understaffed roles take on these roles in the future?
  • Could this expanded role dilute the core role of the anaesthetist?
  • If so, will junior doctors be deterred from joining the specialty?
