NHS as a social enterprise
The skills of pharmacists are not fully utilised in the commercial sector and pharmacists instead choose to establish social enterprises with other health professionals. Privately owned pharmacies, social enterprises and NHS organisations compete in the talent pool for qualified pharmacists, with varying salary offerings and terms and conditions. The opportunities offered in social enterprises such as innovation, efficiency and the delivery of flexible, responsive care increasingly promotes the value of a career in pharmacy to young people.
Proposed workforce impact
- The scale and scope of responsibilities for pharmacists change.
- Increased motivation and feelings of ownership from front-line staff. • Greater incentives are required to retain members of the NHS workforce.
