Maternity services will increasingly be seen as a key element of public health policy delivery

A public policy emphasis on prevention through effective public health interventions will continue. Maternity services and staff will comprise an integral element of public health provision; this aligns well with the midwifery (wellness) model of care.

Public health tasks (such as smoking cessation, alcohol policies, and encouraging breastfeeding and healthy diets) will become an increasing component of many midwives’ and support worker’s roles.

Maternity staff’s public health duties will include pre-conception information, support and advice – a role that might be particularly undertaken by MSWs.
