Increasing population (all ages) increases demand for nursing workforce
The UK population grew at an average of 0.6 per cent each year during the first decade of this century, compared with 0.3 per cent p.a. in the 1990s and 0.2 per cent p.a. in the 1980s. Given the causes (people living longer, birth rate, net migration) it is likely to continue to grow over the next 20 years. (Nursing and Midwifery Council, 2010) Thus even if the need for 'nursing-per-person' stays the same, there will be an increased demand for nursing. Coupled with changing age structure and better survival rates for many conditions (see other ideas for details), the likely growth rate in NHS activity is expected to continue to outstrip population growth, adding further to the overall demand for nursing care.
