Increasing focus on person-centred care
The focus on the individual at the centre of care continues, with a growing departure from the traditional supply-centred model. Emphasis on patient choice and care closer to home prevails, and pharmacists increasingly work off-site delivering care where it is most needed e.g. patients’ homes and mental health charities. Service users are increasingly engaged in decisions about their own care. Underlying individual pharmaceutical care is the pharmacist with knowledge of prescribing, medicine expertise and initiating and managing complex drug regimes.
Proposed workforce impact
- Increased demand for pharmacists as more time is spent with each patient.
- Increased demand for experienced pharmacists with a broad knowledge base.
