Increased demand for public health courses and academic staff to deliver them
There is a shift away from courses being offered by medical schools towards more broad based ones, for example at University of the West of England (UWE). There are approximately 60 courses available in England now.
In recent times there has been some uncertainty over course availability, due to their cost Overseas students are unable to stay after Masters, and councils are increasingly less willing to pay for people to do Masters; previously the culture of NHS was to support people in taking Masters degrees. The availability of courses is also dependent on the availability of research funding at masters, doctoral and post-doctoral levels, which has been squeezed recently.
There may be a possible modest increase in numbers of academics due to an increase in courses, but within non-medical schools where there are more opportunities for expansion. This will, however, be driven by demand from EU-based self-funded students, through reduced bursaries and the possibility of fewer international students.
