Immigration

The middle-grade ranks have largely been supported by doctors from outside the EU but there is now tighter regulation of immigration to the UK. There is also less of an incentive for doctors to leave their home countries as economies and opportunities are improving there, for example in India. The EU is a more limited workforce source, as there is freedom of movement and therefore less regulation of the intake (for example language skills).

Proposed workforce impact

  • There is a potential for a reduction in supply, particularly to the middle grades.

Additional research questions

  • Would a sub-consultant grade or senior clinical fellowship post assist in attracting people to England?
