Greater importance of work relating to wider determinants of health

There is a sense that currently education and training relating to wider determinants of public health are weak, especially around areas such as planning, town planning, food, rural economy etc.

This will become far more important if public health remains in local government, and so education and training may need to take these developments into account (e.g. through Faculty of Public Health (FPH) Part A exams) so as to ensure people at consultant level can deal with issues such as the planning system.

The risk is that people working in public health will need to engage with other policy areas yet may lack the expertise to do so, reducing their influence. Provision may also end up varying from one area to another.
