Geographical distribution of training
Geographical trends in training and consultant posts continue. There are retirement-related shortages of consultant psychiatrists in the North of England, whilst consultants based in the South of England emigrate due to the continued high consultant-to-post ratio there. The Government devises incentives to bring about equal geographical variation.
Proposed workforce impact
- Geographical variations of supply and demand factors for consultant psychiatrists lead to over- and under-supply in England.

Additional research questions
- How can we encourage trainee doctors to train in areas where the future shortages are thought to be the greatest?
- What will the career pathways for psychiatrists and SAS doctors be?
