Extent of financial challenge
For the NHS, there is a broad consensus that ‘the budget will remain flat in real terms, or increase with overall GDP growth at best’ (NHS England, 2013).
In terms of the monetary scale of this challenge, NHS England analysis puts the funding gap – if current service models remain the same – between resource requirements and projected spending at ‘£30bn between 2013/14 and 2020/21.’
