Emergence of commissioning rules affecting funding of CPD in public health
Continuing Professional Development (CDP) schemes within the public health workforce may be affected by new commissioning arrangements operating across different organisations.
The location, delivery and content of training is critical for workforce development in order to ensure vertical and horizontal integration of public health competences. The public health workforce is diverse and highly mobile, and has developed unique networks of training platforms enabling clarity of skills, knowledge diffusion, and gaining of experience and competences across all the public health domains.
It is unclear now whether local authorities together with the commissioning entities will be able to provide and fund the capacity for similar platforms for specialists and practitioners across all public health domains, including suitable specialist training placements. In view of the stated intent for increased community engagement, provisions for professional development training will need to be extended out to the volunteer workforce.
