Cost of implementing new technologies is too high
The pace of innovation has escalated in recent years. However, despite rising demand and volumes, the squeeze on healthcare budgets inhibits the implementation of new technologies. As trusts are given more operational flexibility, the level of income they can derive from the private sector varies. Geographical imbalances in the provision of technology services rise as a result.
Proposed workforce impact
- There are changes to skill mix due to the fragmentation of technology-led service delivery and associated efficiency gains across providers.
- There is increased demand for physicians due to inefficiencies in the service provided.

Additional research questions
- Will skill mix become geographically skewed?
- In which areas will technology be taken up at a faster rate?
