Consultant contracts

A change to the consultant contract could result in differing levels of pay, with a new tier of high-intensity specialists paid more and considered to be so-called superconsultants. This could be used to attract trainees to ICM if there is difficulty attracting them on equal pay with other specialties.

Proposed workforce impact

• A possible increase in the supply of intensivists is possible.
• This might lead to a resulting decrease in the supply of anaesthetists.

• Is extra money enough to persuade junior doctors to undertake a career in a specialty?
• Would this encourage anaesthetists to spend more time or move entirely to the private sector to increase their earnings?
