Closure of local services
Intense market competition and the consolidation of pharmacy services among providers lead to the closure o f many small local pharmacies. Independent pharmacists have been made obsolete by overwhelming market competition from powerful multiples and supermarkets, as well as the development of alternative channels such as online dispensaries. Without the benefits derived from economies of scale, and limited upfront capital to pump prime service differentiation, the viability of local services reduces, and closures continue to rise.
Proposed workforce impact
- Owners of independent pharmacies retire early.
- The profession loses the experience of pharmacy owners.
- Fewer pharmacists in ownership and management roles.
- Training provision to incorporate innovation and leadership skills.
