Choice-driven independence of ICM
- There is uncertainty over the independent or mutual direction of A&ICM. Interviewees were divided on the relative direction and associated skills and competences associated with either a divide or a future merger. The future direction taken may be shaped by public and service-led demand, as this will affect the requirements of the service; the two specialties may have distinct requirements in the future or they may be more closely linked with overlapping requirements to provide a more generalist, flexible service. The choices made by trainees will also shape the future direction as the change in training pathway gives trainees options to consider for the good of their future careers. Service provision is dependent on sufficient supply. Likewise, trainees will make choices dependent on their perceived future success; if the service calls for one type of role over another, this may drive trainee decision-making.
