Changing expectations of postnatal care
Currently maternity services provide postnatal care for 6–8 weeks after birth. Other shapers such as public health concerns and the increase in complex care cases will require additional investments in postnatal care, a substantial proportion of which may be delivered by MSWs in the future for low-risk mothers and families. In order to receive effective continuity of care, mothers and their families may wish to receive maternity service support after 8 weeks. Elements of postnatal care may be increasingly delivered in community centres.
