Change in retirement age and pension provision result in lengthening of maternity staff careers
While the maternity workforce is ageing, with two thirds of currently employed midwives now over the age of 40, in the future it is likely that as a result of changes in retirement age and the NHS pension scheme (such as a move to career average earnings rather than final salary schemes) maternity staff will work longer than has been the case to date.
Economic uncertainty may also result in longer periods of employment participation. Extended careers may reduce posts for newly qualified staff. Part-time working may increase and there will be a greater demand for CPPD to support more flexible career choices.
