Change in attitudes to those diagnosed with SLCN

A change in public opinion, helped by the Disability Discrimination Act, helps tackle patient discrimination and empowers patients.

Respect for individuals with speech, language and communication needs increases. Models of care become more inclusive and individuals with SLCN have better chances at attending university and obtaining jobs. The public expect individuals with SLCN to play a fuller role in society.

Proposed workforce impact

  • A rise in awareness of SLCN needs may reduce demand for SLTs, as other professionals will be more aware of how to support individuals with SLCN. Although this possible reduction in demand would be balanced against the need for SLTs to raise public awareness and train colleagues.
  • Conversely, and possibly more likely, demand could increase as professionals can refer earlier due to increased awareness.
  • Change in demand could increase the emphasis on SLT support in the workplace, requiring services to be organised differently and different skills utilised.
