Artificial organs
Implantable mechanical organs enable patients to live longer. These patients would otherwise have died from organ failure or disease. The current demand for natural organ transplants outstrips the supply and so the ability to manufacture organs saves additional lives.
Proposed workforce impact
- Complex cases may require complex management and more generalist skills.
- When patients live longer, they go on to have further health needs later in life, requiring additional workforce provision.
