Ageing workforce and pensions
The ageing workforce combined with changes to pensions in 2014, contribution rises, revalidation and general disillusionment within the consultant workforce leads to higher rates of early retirement. Consultant disillusionment due to the perceived ‘de-professionalising’ of the medical workforce grows due to the other factors. There is a large cohort of doctors aged around 45-50 in 2013 (including SAS grades providing in-house care) that retire from 2023-2028.

Proposed workforce impact
- This could result in a shortage of consultants and SAS grades.
- It might also impact on the training of lower grades.
